What chiropractors can and can't do in Maryland

Maryland defines chiropractic as a drugless system of health care: diagnosing and locating misaligned or displaced vertebrae and treating disorders through manual manipulation and adjustment of the spine and other skeletal structures. Chiropractors may also select diet and hygiene measures. Maryland chiropractic doesn't include drugs or surgery, or practicing osteopathy, obstetrics or any other branch of medicine. The board also licenses chiropractors with the right to practice physical therapy.

Insurance and coverage in Maryland

Medicare

Medicare Part B covers only one chiropractic service: manual manipulation of the spine to correct a subluxation, when you have a significant neuromusculoskeletal problem and the subluxation is shown by X-ray or physical exam. Once treatment stops improving your condition and becomes maintenance therapy, Medicare stops paying. Other chiropractic services aren't covered.

After a car accident

Maryland auto insurers must provide personal injury protection (PIP) unless the first named insured waives it in writing. PIP pays at least $2,500 toward reasonable and necessary medical expenses incurred within three years of a crash (along with lost income and household services), regardless of fault.

Work injuries (workers' comp)

Maryland Workers' Compensation Commission rules list doctors of chiropractic as authorized providers for services within the scope of Maryland's chiropractic law, and say chiropractors may be paid for services within their scope of practice even where Medicare payment policies would not allow it.
