What chiropractors can and can't do in Louisiana
Louisiana chiropractors diagnose conditions associated with the functional integrity of the spine and treat them with adjustment, manipulation, heat, light, water, electricity, sound, massage, therapeutic exercise, mobilization, mechanical traction and other physical rehabilitation measures, plus hygiene and nutrition advice. They may order diagnostic tests, including CT and MRI, but may not perform those scans themselves. Louisiana chiropractic doesn't include prescribing, dispensing or administering drugs, surgery, obstetrics, X-ray or radium therapy, or nuclear medicine.
Insurance and coverage in Louisiana
Medicaid
Louisiana Medicaid covers manual manipulation of the spine by a licensed chiropractor for beneficiaries under 21. Ages 5 through 20 can get up to 12 dates of service per fiscal year with a referral from an EPSDT screening provider, and more with a referral and prior authorization; children under 5 need prior authorization for every visit. Limits can be exceeded when medically necessary.

Medicare
Medicare Part B covers only one chiropractic service: manual manipulation of the spine to correct a subluxation, when you have a significant neuromusculoskeletal problem and the subluxation is shown by X-ray or physical exam. Once treatment stops improving your condition and becomes maintenance therapy, Medicare stops paying. Other chiropractic services aren't covered.

After a car accident
Louisiana's compulsory liability limits are $15,000 for bodily injury to one person, $30,000 for bodily injury to more than one person in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Medical payments coverage is a separate coverage you can carry for your own injury costs.

What chiropractic care costs in Louisiana
Self-pay prices vary by practice, so ask for the cash price before your first visit. As a reference point, here's what Medicare approves in 2026 for a spinal adjustment in Louisiana (the range covers its 2 Medicare pricing areas):
| 1–2 areas of the spine | $25.40–$26.10 |
|---|---|
| 3–4 areas | $36.67–$37.57 |
| 5 areas | $47.68–$48.75 |
That's the total Medicare approves; with Medicare you typically owe 20% of it after your Part B deductible.
