What chiropractors can and can't do in Colorado

Colorado defines chiropractic as diagnosing and analyzing human ailments and treating them by adjustment or manipulation, by hand or instrument, of the joints and adjacent tissue, particularly the spine, along with supporting procedures and sanitary, hygienic, nutritional and physical remedial measures. It includes venipuncture for diagnostic purposes and, for chiropractors the board deems appropriately trained, acupuncture. It does not include colonic irrigation.

Insurance and coverage in Colorado

Medicare

Medicare Part B covers only one chiropractic service: manual manipulation of the spine to correct a subluxation, when you have a significant neuromusculoskeletal problem and the subluxation is shown by X-ray or physical exam. Once treatment stops improving your condition and becomes maintenance therapy, Medicare stops paying. Other chiropractic services aren't covered.

After a car accident

Colorado auto liability policies must include $5,000 of medical payments (MedPay) coverage unless the named insured rejects it in writing. MedPay pays medical bills from a crash, including chiropractic care, up to the policy limit.

Work injuries (workers' comp)

Colorado's Division of Workers' Compensation sets a fee schedule for medical care to injured workers, and state law makes it unlawful for a chiropractor (or any provider) to bill more than that schedule allows without the director's approval.
